Community Policing Practices

Gain the support and involvement of community members in preventing, intervening and reducing criminal activity is a critical element to the long term success of a police agencies. DTIPS will work with police agencies to review and assess the strengths and weakness of an agencies current community policing relations and develop a specific training or series of training seminars to improve the community policing practices and relationships of its ethnically and culturally diversity service population. DTIPS will provide a training program that is specific to the needs and circumstance of one’s agency. DTIPS training programs can conducted as either direct training for police officers or train-the-trainers sessions for the department’s training officers depending on the assessment conducted at the onset of DTIPS entry. DTIPS’ has a successful history of incorporating a focus on the importance of diversity with respect to race, ethnicity, religion, and gender in community policing and will establish a set of evaluation standards and practices to be met within one year after completing the community policing training.

DTIPS’ personnel has a long history of conducting training seminars in the area of understanding the rudiments of community policing, community relations, facilitating community problem solving forums, setting up community watch programs, conducting events in communities and sustain community policing leadership. The DTIPS’ approach to training community policing will include some lecture, extensive officer participatory practice, and practical and written evaluation. DTIPS will continue to engage with police departments on the implementation of the community policing program and assist in the long term evaluation of the impact of the immediate, end of the year, three year and five year outcomes of the community policing program.
